What is an ETA & Why do I need an ETA to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka government introduced a new Electronic Visa called ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). A Sri Lanka ETA is a complete online process and the approval for the same will be communicated via email. The ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) replaces the need to apply for a Sri Lanka Visa label or stamp.

There are three types of Sri Lanka Visas (ETA Approvals) like Tourist, Business and Transit depending upon your purpose of travel.

Do I Need to Submit my original documents for Sri Lanka Visa processing?

The Sri Lanka ETA is issued online; it is not necessary to submit an original passport or other original documents for processing. You just need to email your scanned documents to us to process your visa.

How early can I apply for Sri Lanka Visa?

You can apply for your visa from minimum 3 days to 2 months prior to your travel date.

What do I need to do after I apply for the ETA?

Once the ETA is approved, we recommend that you keep a copy of the Sri Lanka ETA approval notification to carry with your passport. Upon arrival in Sri Lanka, ETA holders should produce the following requirements at the port of entry:

  • ETA Approval Print copy;
  • A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond stay;
  • A confirmed round trip ticket;
  • Sufficient funds to meet the expenses during stay in Sri Lanka.

What is the validity of the Sri Lanka Visa?

The Sri Lanka Visa is valid for 3 months with a double/multiple entry and you can stay for a maximum period of up to 30 days on each visit.

Can I extend my Sri Lanka Visa?

Yes, it can be extended for up to 90 days by submitting an ETA application at the Head office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DI&E) in Sri Lanka.

Do I need to take health/travel insurance?

You are strongly advised to purchase health / travel insurance to cover yourself in Sri Lanka as medical treatment can be very expensive in Sri Lanka.
